Institute of computational modelling Siberian branch of Russian Academic Sciences

The Institute was founded in January, 1 in 1975 by the decision № 65 of November, 19, 1974 of State Committee of Council of Ministers of the USSR on Science and Engineering as Computational Center of Siberian Branch of Academy of Sciences of the USSR (KCC SB АS USSR).

G. I. Marchuk, Chairman of SB АS USSR, academician, was the initiator of the foundation of the Institute and its organizing director.

V. G. Dulov (1975–1983), Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ya. I. Shokin (1983–1991), academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, were the first directors. Since 1991 V. V. Shaidurov, Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, has been running the Institute.

By the decision № 250 of August, 1, 1997 Presidium of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences renamed the Institute into Institute of Computational Modeling of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (ICM SB RAS) and assigned the scientific direction “Methods of Mathematical Modeling and Smart Information Systems” to it. This direction includes three issues:

1. Methods of computational mathematics and technology of mathematical modeling for the solution of problems of physics, mechanics, physical chemistry.
2. Smart, neuronetic and geoinformation technologies, distributed information systems.
3. Methods of mathematical modeling and computing experiment for maintenance of durability of materials and constructions, safety of complex systems and objects.

In each of these three directions the researchers of the Institute possess a number of significant achievements which received world recognition. The Institute is carrying out joint scientific work with nine Institutes of Higher Education and Scientific Research Institutes of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, USA. Three to five young researchers work on probation in Switzerland, Canada and USA annually.

The foundation of the Institute was very important not only for academic science, but also for the development of productive forces in Eastern Siberia. T he Institute closely cooperates with enterprises and high schools of the city, ten employees run the Departments at four Universities ( Krasnoyarsk State University, Krasnoyarsk State Technical University, Krasnoyarsk State Аrchitectural Academy, Krasnoyarsk State Аgrarian University ). The Institute is the founder and one of the main organizers of the Interuniversity Center of Information Technologies in ecological education. About 120 students of four Institutes of Higher Education do course and degree practical work at the Institute annually.

The total number of the Institute employees is 129 people, including 83 researchers (one Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, 26 Doctors and 50 Candidates of Sciences).

The Institute is a state noncommercial organization and an independent juridical person in the structure of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences; geographically it is a part of Krasnoyarsk Center of Sciences of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. The property of the Institute is a state ownership which is in operative management of Presidium of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Institute.
