Institute of computational modelling Siberian branch of Russian Academic Sciences

The Institute was founded on the 1st of January, 1975 as the Computational Center of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of USSR (KCC SB АS USSR). Academician G. I. Marchuk, Chairman of SB АS USSR, was the organizer of the Center. In 1997 the Center was renamed into the Institute of Computational Modelling SB RAS (ICM SB RAS).

V. G. Dulov

The first director was V. G. Dulov from 1975 till 1983, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. During his leadership the scientific school on mathematical modelling of hypersonic aircraft aeromechanics was generated. For several years V. G. Dulov has been arranging a new institute. The Institute's development concept was based on a combination of fundamental research in computational mathematics and mathematical modelling with applications to the solution of actual problems of the Krasnoyarsk region. Furthermore, the Institute organized solving computational problems for the institutes of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center. In 1978, the Institute carried out researches within the project «Siberia», the programs «Noble and rare metals, copper and nickel of the Krasnoyarsk region», «Aerospace methods of the study of natural resources», and «Clean Yenisei».

Yu. I. Shokin

In 1983, Academician Yu. A. Shokin became a director of the Institute. The researches based on the theory of difference schemes, interval analysis, wave hydrodynamics, informatics, fundamental problems of structural strength of materials, machines for various purposes, the safety of complex technical systems characterized that period of the Institute history. One of the results of those works was the successful completion of contracts with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. The maps of lag time tsunami for some points of the Pacific ocean were created. The maps are used in the operating procedures of the International Tsunami Information Center.

V. V. Shaidurov

In 1990 the Director of the Institute became V. V. Shaidurov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. During these years the staff of the Institute worked on the theoretical substantiation of the construction of optimal computer algorithms, the analysis of applied problems, the study of solvability, stability, the development of effective computational methods. The computational techniques concerning to the grid methods increasing significantly the order of the solutions accuracy in the methods of finite element differences were developed. These studies had been widely recognized. In 2002 V. V. Shaidurov was elected as a full member of the European Academy of Sciences, and in 2003 he was awarded the State Prize in Science and Technology.

In 2007, the Institute was renamed into the Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences «Institute of Computational Modelling of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences»

In 2011, the Institute changed the institution form and was renamed into the Federal State-Financed Institution of Science «Institute of Computational Modelling of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences».

V. M. Sadovskij

In 2016 the Institute was included in the Federal Research Center «Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences» (FRC KSC SB RAS) as a subdivision — the Institute of Computational Modelling of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICM SB RAS). The director of the Institute is Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Vladimir Mikhailovich Sadovskij. He was Director till March 2022. In May 2022 V. M. Sadovskij was elected as corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Now he is Principal researcher of Institute and head of department of Krasnoyarsk Mathematical Center.

V. V. Shaidurov

In March 2022 till current time the Director of the Institute again became V. V. Shaidurov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Institute carries out researches in conformity with the basic direction «Computer Information Modelling of Complex Processes and Systems». It includes three sections:

  • Mathematical modelling and analysis of natural, social and technological processes by means of high-performance computing systems of new generations;
  • Theoretical and experimental support for the development of perspective space technology and engineering;
  • Development of the information-management systems based on the integration of data processing technologies, GIS-modelling and decision support.

Currently, the Institute employs 140 people, including among them, 66 researchers (2 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 21 doctors and 39 candidates of science).

The United Scientific Council on Nano- and Information Technologies of SB RAS performs scientific management of the Institute.
